Cardboard Car Derby

Downtown Business Crawl

This will begin in Simon Park at 3:00pm. Simon Park is located on Front Street, Downtown next to the Conway City Hall. (Cross roads are Front Street and Van Ronkle).   Participants - Downtown Businesses.

Energy

Literacy

Purpose: To introduce environmental book titles to people of all ages and interests; to encourage the joy of reading; and help our youth to make a commitment to care for our environment at the Pledge Tree.   Faulkner County Library Faulkner County Council Becky Thornton; Carl Student Art Students Pam and Martin Heil, Vickie Kirkdofer Vilonia Cub Scout Troop Thanks to the Faulkner County Library, many great books will be given away as door prizes. Natural Resources

Recycling

The Lorax at Conway EcoFest

Events and exhibits     

 GENERAL

The exhibit areas will be set up along the walking trail, so as you walk the trail, you will encounter areas that have many overlapping issues. For example,  the section on Green Building will connect with Energy.  In fact, since ALL sections, and most all in life, are connected  to energy, this connection will be shared at each section.  The Natural Resource section will be located very close to the landfill, waste, recycling and litter sections. The Marketplace, for vendors  will be located outside the ECOlibrium for you to learn more about what is available to them right here in Faulkner County, and enjoy some food and entertainment. 

  • KITES: A Kite Show with some kites as large as 35’ and inflatable (I will confirm name shortly)
  • Kite Building activities
  • Game and Fish Aquarium
  • A butterfly Release to help people realize that balloon releases can kill wildlife
  • An Alleycat  Bike race sponsored by the Conway Advocates for Bicycling (CAB); this ride is a like a scavenger hunt on bikes.  Registration will begin at approximately 9:30 and the race will begin at Laurel Park at 10 a.m.
  • Speakers include Mayor Townsell and Judge Scroggin
  • Program tent will host a variety of programs – schedule  will be posted on the website
  • Entertainment will feature the music  of the Boomers
  • A magician will be on hand and roaming the grounds
  • Food Vendors –The BREWery
  • Petit Jean Meats

Door prizes will be given out throughout the day: these include EcoFest t-shirt signed by Kris Allen; a few refurbished bicycles; a purse; gift certificates; Eco-friendly product/clothing ; and much more.

 

Natural Resources 

  • Natural Resources will include a Leave-no-Trace campsite set up
  • Water testing of local water bodies and purification: Molly Walchuk and the CHS AP Biology students;
  • Watershed and water pollution issues by Ark. dept. of Environmental Quality (ADEQ)-find out where you are and what type of things impact the quality of the water in your area.
  • Caving -  Randy and Ginny Kopper will have information about splunking and Nature Conservany will have an interactive cave for kids to put lighted helmets on and explore
  • Identifying animals tracks - Learn about habitat issues , the many animals that are in our own back yard, and safety issues around these animals
  • Learn about local Tree Board issues

ENERGY

  • Hybrid  and alternative fuel Car/Truck Show:  Will include an interactive Natural Gas Truck; many local cars that are available to you right here in Faulkner County. 
  • All types of energy will be represented to learn more on how each type of energy ; works and how it is used; talk to the experts about how each type of energy is generated, the required infrastructure, economics and more.
  • Portions of wind turbines;  alternative fuels and more.

GREEN BUILDING:

  • People can try out and learn how to blow cellulose
  • Learn the many opportunities for energy audits
  • Learn more on practical ways to winterize homes on a budget
  • Learn how to check duct work
  • Learn how to landscape to save on both  your  water and power bills including rainwater collection system
  • Learn more about LEED Certified buildings; top to bottom
  • Learn about the various levels of eco-efficient homes, businesses and schools (including the many issues that our local Conway Corp  company deals with in terms of Water issues. What we put down our drains, dispose of improperly such as grease down the sink, etc. )
  • Learn about some of the new high tech products can help save energy, resources and money,
  • and more

 

 

FILMS

Films will be shown through out the day. Includes:

  • Coolest Can – good for youth - all ages; short film to see the recycling process of an aluminum can
  • An Inconvenient Truth; Al Gore

  • Recycling  how to, piece produced by local student (short)
  • And more 

 

LITERACY

  • A walk-thru Lorax: this is based on the Dr. Seuss book. Participants can walk through a few big murals into the “forest” and know down trees as is in the book.  Ultimately, people will have an area where they can either see how to,  or make recycled paper; the goal is to teach them an alternative to cutting down trees and preserve our forests.
  • Books geared to all ages; from picture books to Eco-economics will be available to see and read.
  • This area will also feature a Pledge Tree for kids to write a pledge to do something good for the environment  on a handprint, and then place it on the tree.

 

Cardboard Car Derby

We have six cars entered for the AutoCross type of track – see Joe for details on the track.  Participants include International Paper; Mathis Sheet Metal; The Boys and Girls Club; That 70’s Store/ Sheila Stansel; Joe Lamb; Caleb Jennings; Nicholas Myers
